Biblically, we are told sin entered into our world through our great ancestors Adam and Eve. As we are told in Genesis 3:6 Eve ate first of what she was ought not, and then gave to Adam. Interesting… because in 1 Timothy 2:14 we are told by the Apostle Paul… And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.
So, Eve ate first, but Adam bears the responsibility for bringing sin and death into our world as we are told in Romans 5:12… Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned… that seems a bit odd at first sight, does it not? Why is it that Adam carries the eternal blame and shame of sin and death?
To answer that, we need to go back a little further in Genesis… Read with me, Genesis 2: 8-9… The LORD God planted a garden toward the east, in Eden; and there He placed the man whom He had formed. Out of the ground the LORD God caused to grow every tree that is pleasing to the sight and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
And then, Genesis 2: 16-17… The LORD God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”
We read here, that God gave the commandment not to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil to Adam… Eve had not been created from man yet… that won’t occur until Genesis 2: 21-22! Adam as head of the family, had the responsibility to share and teach what God had told him to Eve, his wife. And many theologians believe that Adam failed in this, and that is why Eve was not able to accurately and correctly respond to the serpent.
I believe that is still the case, these many millennium later. Husbands… Fathers, have a responsibility to teach and instruct their families in the word of God. But sadly many men do not even attend church or open God’s word to study it for themselves. They are too busy with careers and other activities to take time and be the head of the home… as God has called us to.
And this in large part explains to me, why the family in the world is in such disarray.
Ephesians 5:25 says… Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her… if we really, truly love our wives and families… we men, will be diligent in the study and application of God’s word and bring that into our families. That is love.
