Under the sun…

Ecclesiastes is an interesting book in the bible. King Solomon in this book is doing his utmost to prove that life is futile and not worth living. Meanwhile the Holy Spirit is using him to show that these conclusions of Solomon’s are the tragic effect of living life “under the sun”- or apart from God.

Recently, I have been dealing with heartbreak and sadness. It is easy in those times to want to live life “under the sun” and just live in depression. To live as King Solomon says in Ecclesiastes 9:9…

Enjoy life with the woman whom you love all the days of your fleeting life which He has given to you under the sun; for this is your reward in life and in your toil in which you have labored under the sun.

Because, in sadness and heartbreak, I as a human-being can begin to think… what’s the point? But, that my friends is a fiery dart from Satan and is a lie from the pit of hell itself… we are not to live our lives only “under the sun” but also “in the Son,” Jesus. For we are told in 1 John 2:24…

As for you, let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father.

If I live life “under the sun”… ultimately, I will live out my life in futility. BUT, if I live mu life “in the Son”, I am told in Ephesians 3:17-19…

so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.

In the Son, I will be filled up in the fullness of God. Life is hard… but we need to remember, that we don’t see the “big picture.” However, Jesus does… I just need to keep trusting in Him. He needs to be the SOURCE of my happiness… not, this life and what it has to offer. Amen.
